Energy Efficiency

Did you know on average your home’s HVAC system accounts for 40% of your electric bill? All the more reason energy efficiency should be on your mind when looking to upgrade your system. There are several industry standard terms to look for when discussing energy efficient HVAC equipment. Those to be aware of are:

SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a metric that describes a system’s cooling efficiency. A SEER ≥ 15 is considered energy efficient.

HSPF: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, is a metric that describes a system’s heating efficiency. A HSPF ≥ 8.5 is considered energy efficient.

EER: Energy Efficiency Ratio, also known as Energy Efficiency Rating, provides you with a ratio of useful cooling output (in BTU hours) to electricity input (measured in Watts). An EER ≥ 12.5 is considered energy efficient.

AHRI: AHRI stands for Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Institute. AHRI is a recognized third-party North American certification program that provides accurate and unbiased evaluation of a HVAC system. Each HVAC system is assigned an AHRI directory number where system efficiency ratings can be looked up (this can be found on the AHRI directory website AHRI Certification Directory (ahridirectory.org). **NOTE: A single piece of HVAC equipment may be marketed by other manufacturers/HVAC contractors as high efficiency, however customers must be aware it is the system as a whole where efficiency is determined, not from just a single component. Do your due diligence and request an AHRI number from your HVAC contractor to look up your system.

Ductless systems

Ductless systems are solutions that heat and cool without the use of ductwork. Depending on the application, Single- and multi-zone systems are available.

Single Zone: Single Zone ductless systems control the temperature in one room or area by connecting one outdoor unit to one indoor unit.

Multi-Zone: Multi-Zone ductless systems control the temperature in multiple rooms or areas by connecting one outdoor unit to multiple indoor units.
